Teen with beauty biz idea wins award

3 06 2008

An award-winning hair idea – says the 17 year old girl who came up with it – wasn’t “all that.” Yet Merissa Dominquez is one of 41 students to receive a 2008 Global Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Dominguez presented her business plan – for a company that would provide shampoo and conditioning, braiding and coloring to senior citizens in retirement homes and hospitals – to her entrepreneurship class last year.

Basically, says Joel Warren, the executive director with the foundation, “she was competing with 20,000 others taking the course, and she’s done pretty well. … It’s our mission to work with kids that don’t have money, and to take this experience with them to the next economic level.”

Warren felt that Dominquez’s business would do well serving the high-end nursing homes in the area and could start a “where did you get your hair done?” buzz.
