Sketchy Recycling Components in Chinese Hair Accessories

If you ever find yourself in China and consider buying hair accessories – buyer beware! The country is taking a recycling obsession to a new level. Of course it’s great for developing nations to be reducing their waste, but we’re not sure how effective – or safe – it will be to recycle used condoms.

According to Indian news outlet, MyNews.in, rubber hair bands made out of recycling used condoms are being sold in the local markets and beauty salons in Southern China’s Guangdong province. While condoms are made to safeguard one from sexually transmitted diseases, hair bands made out of used condoms is a potential threat to spread those sexually-transmitted diseases.

Although the hair accessories will have gone through the recycling process, they could potentially still contain some amount of dangerous bacteria and viruses. Health officials and local doctors opined that in every possibility people could be infected with a number of diseases if they casually hold the hair bands in their mouths while working their hair – and who doesn’t do that?!
